The Las Canas Story | ||
Garry met Sarah, who already lived here, while he was on holiday. To cut a long story short, they bought a Spanish tapas bar - Las Canas. Their intention was to keep it much the same but to attract customers from all nations.
With an interest in drag racing Garry had travelled extensively in the USA becoming a fan of the food served in classic American diners, especially their hamburgers. While cooking at Las Canas, he would prepare American recipes for himself and Sarah.
The true American hamburger is nothing to do with ham - and certainly not the pork, chicken and bread mix from which cheap burgers are made these days. It is 100% beef, based on the recipes brought to the USA by the early German immigrants - who all travelled via Hamburg.
Being a perfectionist, Garry initially made his own burgers until he was able to find a manufacturer who used 100% beef. He then persuaded a local butcher to make 100% chicken burgers. Soon, customers were asking for burgers in preference to the meals on the menu and for Las Canas the path to success came into view: American diner food, made from the best possible ingredients, cooked to perfection, and sold at a reasonable price.
Although food would be the main focus, Las Canas would still offer a wide variety of drinks of all types plus a few home comforts for the UK expats - without making it a British Bar.
And Garry still cooks as if he was cooking for himself. If it's not good enough it doesn't get served to a customer; it goes in the bin.
Garry and Sarah say that everyone is welcome in their little diner/cafe/bar tucked away in Corralejo. It's a gem of a place like no other and they are rightly proud to have created a friendly meeting place for all nationalities.
They don't now regard themselves as going to work any more; they simply spend every day meeting friends, old and new, from all over the world.
